What to Do If You and Your Dog Encounter a Snake
Share
Spring is here! The flowers are blooming, the sun’s out and our dogs are living their best lives. But with the warmer days also comes a little slithery challenge… yep, snakes are back on the move.
If you’re out exploring with your pup, here’s what you need to know so spring adventures stay safe and fun:
🐍 Why snakes are more active now
When the weather warms up, snakes wake up from their winter snooze and head out looking for food and love (yep, they’re just trying to find a hot date). That means you’re more likely to spot one on a trail, in tall grass or even in your own backyard.
And we all know dogs curious noses + wiggly tails = a risky combo around snakes.
🐾 What to do if you see a snake
-
Stay calm. Don’t panic. Easier said than done, but your dog will feed off your energy.
-
Leash up. If your dog isn’t already on lead, clip it on straight away.
-
Give space. Slowly back away and let the snake go about its business.
-
No hero moves. Don’t try to scare it off or let your pup investigate.
🚨 If your dog gets bitten
-
Keep them still. Movement spreads venom faster, so carry your dog if you can.
-
Stay calm (again). Panic won’t help you or your dog.
-
Pressure bandage. If you know how, wrap a bandage firmly starting at the bite site.
-
Straight to the vet. Call ahead so they’re ready for you.
-
❌ Don’t wash the bite, cut it or try to suck out venom.
🌿 How to lower the risk
-
Stick to open tracks instead of long grass and scrub.
-
Keep dogs on leash in high risk spots.
-
Brush up on recall and “leave it”. It can literally save lives.
-
Some trainers offer snake avoidance training, might be worth checking out.
🌸 Enjoy spring safely
Spring adventures are what dogs dream of, and with a little awareness, you can keep them safe from our scaly neighbours. Pack the treats, clip on the leash and go soak up those sunny days. Just keep an eye out for any unexpected wiggles in the grass.
